TYPICAL FOOD


TARALLI

The presence of tarallo in the history of Sicily is ancient and rooted, but in Racalmuto the tarallo is special. It was "Piuzzo Lo Bue" who created these sweets different from the others of the Agrigento area precisely for the lemon aroma and the sugar glaze. You can find them in our patisseries.

STIGGHIOLE

Stigliola is one of the oldest foods of the Sicilian peasant tradition. Food of the party, of special occasions and of great "binges". You can find it in our butchers.

MPIGNULATE

Mpignulata is one of the typical foods of Racalmuto. Originally the wives prepared this portentous dish rich in flavor and nutrients to allow their husbands the right sustenance for the hard days of work in the fields.

LEMON GRANITA

The lemon granita is characterized by the use of exclusively fresh fruits collected in the gardens of the districts: Raffo, Saraceno, Garamoli, Roccarossa. Areas rich in water that allow you to have sweet and juicy fruits, essential characteristics for obtaining the final product. You can find it at the historic Bar Parisi and in all the other pastry shops and bars


FEGATO CAIOLATO

Typical recipe to "celebrate" the pig, the "real wealth" in peasant culture. This particular dish is now also prepared with veal liver. The slices, about 1.5 cm thick, are wrapped with netted fat (caiola), then vegetable aromas, salt and pepper are added. Put the Fegato on a pre-heated grill, you will have to wait for the slices to turn brown-red to be served. Olive oil and lemon. You can find it at our butchers.

CUBAITA

The presence of the “cubaita” in the history of Racalmuto is ancient and rooted. Of Arab origin, due to its simplicity of execution and the nutritious goodness of its ingredients, it was almost immediately adopted throughout Sicily. Prepared without sesame (giuggilena) and with the presence of the “tuono” almond cultivar, the “cubaita racalmutese” differs from the “cubaita” widespread in the rest of the Sicilian territory making this specialty a territorial specificity. You can find it at "Cose Siciliane" near the statue of Sciascia and at all the pastry shops

Fruit market


One of the last small markets where it is possible to find natural fruit and vegetables made in Racalmuto with old systems of Arab origin, not industrialized. Where you can find medlars, grenades, quinces, small lotuses, red broccoli, and the last delights of Arab gardens, tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, courgettes and chicory.

TREKKING

Racalmuto is a stage of the Magna Via Francigena.

From the Cathedral of Palermo, it takes pilgrims through the countryside coming from Milena, towards Grotte and then reaching as their final destination, the Cathedral of Agrigento

MOTORSPORT

The Racalmuto racetrack is one of the most recent motorsport facilities born in Italy. Here it is easy to combine passion for engines, art, culture and gastronomy. Inaugurated in July 2005, it quickly became a reference point for all fans.

FEAST MARIA SS. DEL MONTE

Since 1503 Viva Maria


The celebrations in honor of Maria SS. del Monte, Regina and Compatrona of Racalmuto traditionally started during the second week of July. The party starts on the Friday following the first Sunday of the month and lasts for five days. The party officially begins on Friday at 6 pm announced by traditional 21 cannon shots, followed by the "tammuriata" and the entrance of the town band. At 7 pm from the Chiaramontano Castle the historical procession of young people in fifteenth-century dresses on horseback recalling the arrival in Racalmuto of Prince Gioeni. The procession ends at the Sanctuary of the Madonna where the local authorities offer a tribute to the co-patron. At 8 pm the procession of the Simulacrum of the Madonna begins "u triunfu", placed on a "cart pulled by two oxen" At the arrival of the procession in Piazza Crispi, a re-enacting play entitled "La vinuta di la Madonna di lu Munti" is staged. On Saturday the traditional descent of the CERI (Cilii) takes place and the flag is taken, with a devoted tribute to the Madonna by the Burgisi, the ritual involves the parade of the candles by the Burgisi, the Ugliara and the Cicirara, followed by the taking of the flag on the candle placed on the wooden tower by the "schetti". Sunday, the final day of the celebrations, sees the delivery of the "prummisiuni" to the sanctuary. Men and women, by grace received, followed by harnessed mules and loaded with bags of wheat, go on foot to the sanctuary. Some devout knights make their entrance to the sanctuary after having climbed the staircase leading to the entrance. Li Prummisioni continue in the afternoon. The celebrations end with the procession of the Virgin on a wagon in the shape of a ship. The end of the feast is sanctioned by a show of fires of artifice in Piazza Barona The days of Monday and Tuesday following the religious and devotional celebrations are instead dedicated to initiatives of the local public administration.


Holy Easter


The rite of the Crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday is linked to the Church of Carmel: above the steps of the church, which symbolizes Golgotha, the Nazarene is put on the cross, after a long and participatory procession symbolically accompanies the painful ascent. of Jesus at Calvary from the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte, up to the local Golgotha. After the deposition, from Piazza del Carmelo, the procession with the "Vara" winds its way up to the Sanctuary of Maria SS del Monte

St. Joseph


The main feature of the feast of San Giuseppe linked to the homonymous church located in Piazza Umberto I is the live representation of the Holy Family. The eve is prepared and a huge bonfire is set on fire, in which old furniture and wood are deposited, on top of which a barrel is placed that symbolize fertility and abundance. On the morning of March 19, a procession with figures representing the Holy Family runs through the main streets of the town up to Piazza Umberto I where a rich canteen is set up on the stage erected there where meals are offered for graces received or to be received. .

Our Lady of Carmel


The last three days of the second week of August are dedicated to the Feast of the Madonna del Carmelo. From Friday to Sunday, popular events are held in the square including the watermelon festival and the inhabitants of the neighborhood prepare the "cuccia", cooking wheat with other legumes, to be offered to friends and relatives as a sign of thanks for the harvest they had.

Our Lady of Grace


The cult for the SS. Vergine delle Grazie whose feast is solemnized on the third Sunday of November. Tradition has it that the families of the San Giuliano district prepare "li guasteddi fritti", a focaccia, prepared with the dough for bread, fried and then garnished with sugar, to be offered to relatives and friends who come to visit to attend the festivities.

The Christmas Novenas

From December 16th to 24th -  For nine days, after about a month the youngest of Racalmutesi have built in different places, not always the same over the years, more and more rich nativity scenes, music and popular songs fill these corners of the country awakening and reviving to old and young people ancient melodies linked to the most intimate Christmas tradition of Racalmuto.

Novenas come to life every year thanks above all to groups of singers and spontaneous groups that meet each year to remember by singing the most joyful part of the Advent period.
